Setting the Scene in Asia for SDGs Implementation at local level
“Regional Workshop on SDG Learning Agenda for Local Government in the context of South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC)” was held in Negombo, Sri Lanka, from 9-12 December 2015. It was hosted by the city of Negombo and organized jointly by UCLG, UCLG ASPAC, the Federation of Sri Lankan Local Government Authorities (FSLGA), and the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The meeting gathered over 40 participants from Local Authorities, Local Government Associations and Training Centers for Local Governments from several Asian countries (Sri Lanka, Bhutan, India, Japan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and South Korea). Experts from the Netherlands, Philippines, Spain, and South Africa were also invited to present their views on localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as their scope of work, with a focus on knowledge-sharing.
The purpose and objectives of the meeting were a) to develop a tool and roadmap to translate SDGs to local governments for a learning program to help local governments to localize and mainstream the SDGs into their development agenda; and b) to facilitate South-South Triangular exchanges and Cooperation (SSTC) among cities with a special focus on Asia.
